Strong begin to 2023 as Portuguese bike production rises 21%

AGUEDA, Portugal – The Portuguese two wheel and soft mobility sector registered a 21.68% increase in export in January, compared to the same period in 2022, data released by the National Statistics Institute of Portugal (INE) shows. The value of bicycle and component exports is also continuing to break records.
Portugal is solidifying its status as the largest bike producer in Europe. 2022 proved to be a very successful year for the Portuguese bicycle and e-bike industry. The total export value increased by no less than 37% from €594 million in 2021 to more than €800 million, according to industry association ABIMOTA. This success is continuing into 2023. In January 2023 alone, the export value reached €60,251,794, which represents the 24th consecutive month of growth.
Promotion for reshoring in Europe
ABIMOTA is continuing to bolster the profile of the Portuguese industry on an international scale through promotion at global events. The industry association represented eleven Portuguese bicycle companies at the recent Taipei Cycle Show and Copenhagen Bike Show events.
“The search for new markets and, above all, the increased commitment to competitive markets, such as those from central and northern Europe, allowed the sector to reinforce its commitment to quality and higher-value products. Besides a focus on quality, the Portuguese industry is also relying more on the production of components, making Portugal and Europe less dependent on external markets,” ABIMOTA said in a statement in reference to exceeding 3 million unit exports in 2022.
