PORTUGAL LEADS EUROPEAN BICYCLE PRODUCTION

Data released by Eurostat place Portugal as number one in bicycle production, with 2.7 million units produced in 2019.

In 2019, the EU produced more than 11.4 million bicycles, an increase of 5% over the previous year and 10% above the numbers produced in 2014.

Among the EU Members, Portugal became the largest bicycle producer in 2019, manufacturing 2.7 million bicycles, followed by Italy (2.1 million), Germany (1.5 million), Poland (0.9 million ) and the Netherlands (0.7 million).

Together, these five countries represent 70% of the EU's total bicycle production in 2019.

The current national leadership among the European bicycle producers is the result of an intense work program developed by the industries and by ABIMOTA, as an association that represents the sector, in order to promote the Portuguese bicycles production.

The creation of Portugal Bike Value, a program that aims to promote the Portuguese product abroad and attract foreign investment to Portugal, was a milestone for the sector, as it endows it with data and capabilities that allow greater competitiveness and pursuit of common objectives.

From the Portuguese point of view, 2019 was the best year ever for the sector, which closed with 402 886 329.00 Euros, only in exportations.

In the beginning of 2020, some Portuguese companies registering production growth of around 400% and despite the closure that the industries had to respect during the period of social isolation motivated by the fight against COVID-19, and after the resumption of the activity, everything indicates that this number ratio will be maintained, according to ABIMOTA's forecasts.
